Below are some suggested at home activities for Grade One students when school has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Please remember that these activities are NOT mandatory to complete.
1. Home Reading: Your child can practice their home reading.
2. Reading Books at Home: Your child can read books you have at home.
3. Spelling Word Practice: Your child's weekly spelling words are written in their planners. Remember that your child can practice their words using paper and pencil, but can also practice by using Play Doh, gel pens, markers, paint, letter magnets, letter beads, etc.
4. Writing: Your child can write a short story (2-3 sentences) on ONE of the following writing prompts...
-Prompt #1: Do you like winter? Why?
-Prompt #2: What is your favourite game to play? Why?
-Prompt #3: I wish I had 100 ______/ I would not like 100 _________.
After writing their story they can draw and colour a picture to match their writing.
5. Number Formation: Using Play Doh have your child build their numbers from 1 to 20.
6. Skip Counting: Count out loud with your child forwards and backwards from 1 to 50 by 1's.
7. Play Games that Use Dice: If you have board games, such as Snakes and Ladders, that use dice to play this is a good way to practice your child's math skills.
